Cycle Touring Travel Insurance for Long Trips

Cycle touring travel insurance must cover more than just medical emergencies.  It needs to account for the unique nature of cycle touring including multiple countries and valuable gear.

As well as standard features such as medical and repatriation cover, look for policies that cover cycle touring as the main purpose of the trip. Many policies will only cover cycling that is incidental to your trip (such as hiring a bike for the day) and not the sole purpose. This limitation is often buried in the policy wording and can be easily missed.

Another key feature is personal liability cover. This covers you if you are liable to pay damages due to accidentally injuring someone or causing loss or damage to their property. Many insurers won’t provide personal liability cover when you are cycle touring. At Cover My Adventure, all our listed cycle touring policies include personal liability cover.

Cycle touring trips can range from a few days to over a year. However, many single trip and annual insurance policies have a maximum trip length which can be as short as one month. Therefore, it is vital to check the policy details when you are looking for cycle touring insurance for long trips.

Also, be aware that, returning home during your long trip could invalidate your policy. Many policies state that cover ends when you re-enter your home country. It is important to check the terms and conditions and confirm this with your insurer.

Two policies we reviewed stand out in this space;
SportsCover Direct single trip policies insure trips up to 12 months. They cover cycle touring and includes personal liability cover. However, this policy will not cover you to return to your home country during your long trip.

Big Cat Travel Insurance goes even further, covering trips up to 24 months. For trips longer than 4 months, their single trip policy allows you to return to your home country as many times as you like. They also allow you to extend your existing travel insurance whilst travelling (up to the maximum 24 months), even if you bought your original travel insurance from another company.
